After the virus get into the body, a person could get an outbreak days, week, months years or not at all. Some people get an outbreak two days to three weeks after infecting the virus. In some cases people could be married for years and only one person of the couple get outbreak.

Some outbreaks are severe while others are mild or no existant outbreaks with little even no symptoms. People are different, but many of them do have similar symptoms like blisters. The reason is still not sure, but these factors could affect the chance of having an outbreak:

1. Emotional or physical Stress. More stress may result in more reactivation of HSV.

2. Some foods are reported to affect outbreaks like alcohol, popcorn, nuts, chocolate and coffe. Poor diet is also a factor.

3. Fatigue and sickness is another two triggers. When you are sick or lack of sleep, your immune system is weak.

4. Rubbing and friction during sex. Adequate lubrication can be used to reduce the rub when you have sex, but please be careful that condoms and lubricants containing nonoxynol-9 could increase outbreaks by irritating the skin.

5. Menstrual cycle. Women are more likely to get outbreaks around menstruation. Tampons may make the outbreaks severe due to the rubbing during insert and remove. Some women found natural cotton brands are less irritating.

6. Tight underwear or pads. They produces another kind of rubbing that can cause an outbreak.

Personal factors like lifestyle may trigger the outbreaks. Taking good care of yourself is what you can do to stop or reduce the herpes outbreaks.
